How to Get and Wake Onix in Pokémon Pokopia

Step-by-step guide to finding, waking, freeing, and befriending Onix in Pokémon Pokopia.

If you are trying to figure out how to get Onix in Pokopia or how to wake the sleeping Onix during the drought quest, this is the full route.

Onix is one of the rarest Pokémon in Pokopia, requiring you to complete a multi-step quest before it appears on your island.

Prerequisites

Before Onix can appear, you must:

  1. Raise island humidity to level 3 (see humidity guide)
  2. Complete the "Yawn Up A Storm" main quest
  3. Build at least one Boulder-shaded Tall Grass habitat

The Yawn Up A Storm Quest

  1. Talk to the Sleepy Professor NPC (found near the island's eastern boulder field)
  2. He asks you to help him find what's causing the drought
  3. Follow the dry riverbed north to find a sleeping Onix blocking a stream
  4. You need a Pokémon with the Push or Dig specialty to wake it
  5. Use Geodude (easiest early-game Dig Pokémon) to dig around it
  6. Onix wakes up and clears the stream — humidity rises to level 5

Building the Habitat

After the quest, Onix won't stay permanently unless you build the right habitat:

Boulder-shaded Tall Grass:

  • Tall Grass × 4
  • Large Boulder × 1

Place the habitat in a rocky area of your island. Onix has a chance to visit when:

  • Weather: Cloudy
  • Time: Any (higher chance at dawn)
  • Rarity: Very Rare (patience required!)

Befriending Onix

When Onix visits, you need 10 successful interactions before it befriends you:

  1. Offer it Stone treats (craft from Stone × 2)
  2. Avoid running near it — Onix startles easily
  3. Use the Earth Charm food buff to increase interaction success rate
